Police Pay Award 2017/18 Announced

On 12 September 2017, the government announced a 2% pay award for police officers in 2017/18. Our handy guide will show you how salaries for each rank and paypoint have been affected.

The award means a 1% pay rise to the basic salary and a 1% bonus paid monthly over the next 12 months.

This is an improvement on the 1% increase granted in 2016, but doesn’t match the 2.8% rise requested by the Police Federation of England and Wales.

A spokesperson for the government announced that the award which police officers will receive will include:

  • 1% increase in pay for all ranks
  • one-off payment to officers at federated and superintending ranks
  • 1% increase to the London Weighting payment
  • 1% increase to the Dog Handlers’ Allowance

This means that pay scales have changed across the board, and constables appointed on or after April 2013 commencing service will earn £19,971 and receive a bonus payment of £198 to be paid in monthly instalments over the next 12 months. Sergeants on the first level of pay will earn £39,693 with a bonus payment of £393, and Inspectors on the first payment level will earn £49,176 with a bonus payment of £486.

How do they come to these figures?

The award was granted following recommendations by the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) and the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB).

The PRRB was founded in September 2014 to make recommendations to the prime minister and home secretary on police pay. The PRRB receive written submissions from interested parties that include the Police Federation, Superintendents’ Association, Chief Officers and PCCs. Pay scales are no longer negotiated and are now based on evidence from each interested party, such as the Police Federation, Superintendents’ Association, Chief Officers and PCCs.

The public sector pay increase has been capped at 1% since 2010, however in September it was reported that the government has now signalled it’s set to rise above inflation for the first time in nearly a decade.
